“I STRIVE TO EMULATE MAKING MUSIC, TO ME THE MOST POWERFUL ART FORM.”
Claudia Gioseffi Zaik has been painting all her life. Memories from childhood play a role in inspiring her images along with her immediate surroundings and travels. Oil paint is the best medium for expressing her ideas due to its richness and translucence— she often lets the imprimatura, or semi-transparent first layer of paint, show through.
The relationship of figures with buildings and sidewalks dominated her work while she resided in cities—some say her depictions of houses, tree-lined streets and umbrellas give an impression of shelter. Now that she lives in the Low Country and finds herself journeying to wilder settings, she is intrigued by a renewed relationship with nature, especially its spiritual aspects. She says each painting is a new challenge to harmonize color, movement and feeling.

Whatever the subject, her dreamlike paintings imply a story, which isn’t surprising since she is also a writer who’s been told she paints with words. Her published books include one about art and another about travel. Claudia Gioseffi Zaik’s paintings have been exhibited throughout the United States, and her solo exhibition history includes galleries on the West Coast, East Coast and Santa Fe. Her group exhibitions follow a similar pattern, and her work has been featured on the covers of various books and magazines. Apart from gallery representation, she shows her work to collectors at her studio located in May River Forest—where oaks, mosses and tidal marshes carpeted with shape-shifting coastal grasses offer fertile inspiration.
